Mercer Street Friends

Welcome to Mercer Street Friends Urban Gateway Enhancement Program

The Urban Gateway Enhancement Program is a collaborative effort of Mercer Street Friends, the City of Trenton, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Capital County Children's Collaborative. The program teaches landscaping and other work-related skills and habits to youth, ages 14-19, some of whom have broken the law.

A professional landscaper gives hands-on instruction about equipment and tools to the young people, who are paid to help make their neighborhoods more attractive through landscaping services.

A Mercer Street Friends counselor leads a daily class on values, nonviolent resolution of conflict, decision-making skills and career exploration. This combination of work and counseling is designed to guide young people toward productive behavioral patterns.

One of the projects completed by the Urban Gateway Enhancement Program is a landscape on the Barlow Circle near the train station, where the word "Trenton" is spelled out in evergreen plants.
