MSF Community Schools Continue although School is Closed

Mercer Street Friends is continuing its work with children who normally would be attending both Gregory Elementary School and Rivera Community Middle School which is closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The purpose is to extend mental health services and case management to the 150 Kindergarten through Eighth Grade students under the care of the Community School Impact Center of Mercer Street Friends.

The School Day Program has been extended electronically with Youth Development and After School Activities, Coding with Computer Programming, STREAM – Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics – physical activities and other ways that Mercer Street Friends normally would work with the students.

In partnership with The College of New Jersey, a mentor portal has been created for all students who are chronically absent. “We are going to continue filling the gaps at this time academically and emotionally for the students,” explained Chelsea Jenkins, Program Manager of Community Schools, “accomplishing working with them to making a difference despite the circumstances in these unprecedented times.”
