The Need for Weekend Emergency Food Bags Escalate

When the threat of COVID-19 became clearer, and social distancing was mandated, the greatest question posed to Mercer Street Friends was “how will we be sure that families in Trenton will have food for the weekend?”

Mercer Street Friends has now completed our third Friday distributing Weekend Emergency Food Bags to families throughout Trenton. In partnership with the Trenton School District and Aramark Food Services, on Friday, April 3, 2020, a total of 1,030 Emergency Food Bags were distributed, increased from the 975 bags that were offered on Friday, March 27, 2020.

Incredibly, our staff witnessed a line of individuals and families waiting for food for multiple blocks. We know that this is just the beginning and expect that next Friday, we will see more lines and field more requests. This need is evident and because of the incredible support of individuals, foundations and businesses, we are doing all we can to meet the needs of those who are food insecure.
