Mercer Street Friends Wraps Up Summer 2020

On September 4, 2020, the final summer Community Food Bag was distributed to our neighbors, closing out Mercer Street Friends’ summer Community Food Bag program. With over 900 bags distributed that day, we recognize the power of our community to stand with our neighbors during the most trying of times.

Since March 20, 2020, thanks to the incredible generosity of time and financial support, Mercer Street Friends has distributed over 32,000 Community Food Bags to our neighbors throughout Trenton and Mercer County. Families received over 512,000 meals, offering relief from food insecurity for the weekends.  We will continue to provide Community Food Bags through the rest of this calendar year and beyond, as necessary.

In addition to the Community Food Bag initiative, Mercer Street Friends hosted the Summer Feeding program, funded by the US Department of Agriculture, distributing food to students at four sites throughout Trenton and Mercer County. Between June 22nd and September 4th, 7,230 summer meals were distributed to children and our community partner, TASK (Trenton Area Soup Kitchen), provided 13,000 Adult summer meals at the two Trenton locations.

All of Mercer Street Friends work within Trenton and Mercer County is made possible by our volunteers and our contributors. We applaud the work of 242 volunteers who stood in solidarity with our neighbors, assembling and distributing Community Food Bags each Friday for the past 25 weeks.

We extend our thanks to Mike Daley, President and CEO of OrthogenRx, for offering 2,940 dozen fresh eggs to our neighbors on a monthly basis.

Through the US Department of Agriculture, high quality fresh produce in 18 to 22 lb. boxes have been delivered to food pantry partners throughout the summer.

Thank you to Costa Rican Civic Association for providing over 500 loaves of bread each week at our Columbus Park location in Trenton in conjunction with the fresh meals distributed by the Capital Area YMCA.

Our continued thanks to United Way of Greater Mercer County for their support in underwriting Community Food Bags during the summer and for their longtime partnership.

While the days are getting shorter, the need remains great. Mercer Street Friends is committed to ensuring that our neighbors are provided with the support they need today, tomorrow and for whatever comes next.

Thank you all for your confidence in our work and for your commitment to feeding those in need. We look forward to keeping you apprised of the impact of your contributions and wish you a safe and healthy Fall.
