It’s been an amazing summer for students from Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School as they focused on academics and extracurricular activities through the Mercer Street Friends Summer Bridge Program! Designed to assist students in continuing their skills throughout the summer, mornings are filled with writing exercises including informational texts, poetry, and short stories. Students have spent hours focusing on sharpening their math skills through problem solving activities. In our efforts to provide a well-rounded program, our budding visual artists are creating short films using a digital camera and drone to capture their films.
During afternoon enrichment sessions students have been exploring different topics like cooking, yoga, social justice, and entrepreneurship with the help of community members. Additionally, Mercer Street Friends developed a curriculum called “Zones” to support the social emotional needs of students which teaches techniques for self-management, emotional regulation, empathy, and reducing reactivity.
Community service is at the heart of the enrichment program. As such, students have planned several projects that support active military members and local organizations such as Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, WomanSpace, Mercer County Meals on Wheels, and Trenton Rescue Mission.
We are extremely proud of our MLK Bears and their hard work this summer!
