Adult Basic Education
Our Adult Basic Education Program empowers individuals to build the skills they need to succeed – with the ultimate goal of earning a New Jersey State Diploma. We focus on student recruitment and retention, test preparation, and measurable academic progress. Along the journey, we proudly celebrate each milestone and every success our adult students accomplish.
Our approach is personal and supportive. Adults work one-on-one with a teacher or volunteer instructor to complete programs that align with New Jersey Common Core Standards and College and Career Readiness Standards.
Instructors and volunteers are trauma-informed and understand that our adult students bring a wide range of life experiences to the classroom. We support not only academic growth, but also the emotional, nutritional, and mental wellbeing each learner needs to thrive.
“Tiffany left high school almost 20 years ago. She always wanted to earn her high school diploma but was apprehensive about pursuing it having attempted different programs without success. Living close to our Adult Ed Program, she passed by the Mercer Street Friends building often – each time trying to gather the courage to enter and get started. With great resolve, Tiffany walked through the doors and within just a few months passed two sections of the high school equivalency exam. Soon, we expect Tiffany will pass them all and will celebrate with her diploma in hand and belief in her future.”

“Nikishau is a mom of four and works full time. She enrolled in our adult education program in January 2021 and was determined to earn her diploma and enter nursing school… which is exactly what she did. In less than a year, Nikishau took and passed all five subsections of the HiSET exam, earning her diploma. She immediately enrolled in a nursing program. When Mercer Street Friends checked in with her a few months later, she was happy to inform me that she had a successful first semester and had made the Dean’s List.”
