Community Schools Bring Together Families for Holiday Meal

By Nigel Johnson, Site Coordinator, B.C. Gregory Elementary School

Gregory Elementary Community School recently celebrated our 3rd Annual Community Friendsgiving!

What started as an idea to bring together our students, their families, and Gregory Staff has turned into a dinner for ALL the Community. Each year, thanks to the partnership between Mercer Street Friends & Gregory Elementary School, we are able to host our school families and community in our schoolhouse for one night to come together as a FAMILY for a holiday meal. I emphasize family because that is what this event is all about – FAMILY.

Thanks to contributions from our school staff – teachers, kitchen and security staff, TCNJ Bonners, volunteers, and more – we are able to pitch in together to either cook, buy, or serve food to the families that are able to join us on this one special evening. It is a night we come together and celebrate our blessings and having one another.

None of this would be possible without the tremendous leadership of Gregory School Principal Jeannette Harris and Director of Community Schools for Mercer Street Friends, Bernadette Trapp. These two women are here for our community & for our people! And let me not forget to thank Mercer Street Friends leaders for their full support as well: Our CEO Bernie Flynn and COO Butter Allen! Their leadership and contributions to our Friendsgiving allow our event to flourish.

Our family dinner has grown exponentially the past few years. This year we welcomed over 250 family members & guests for a fabulous night of fun, laughter, music, food and love. Truly a night to remember – and exactly how we envision our Community School to be!
