Bernie Flynn joined Mercer Street Friends as a full-time volunteer Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in February, 2020 – right before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in the United States. He was drawn to the organization because of its leadership role in the Trenton Community School Initiative and quickly learned about the Food Bank, Preschool, and Adult and Family Services while consulting on behalf of MSF in 2019.
New Jersey’s largest property casualty insurance company, NJM Insurance Group, noted for its regular distribution of policy holder dividends and award-winning customer service, employed Bernie for 25 years (1993-2018) – the last 10 as CEO. Before his time at NJM, he was a New Jersey Deputy Attorney General from 1987 to 1993, serving as counsel to the Commissioner of Insurance from 1991 to 1993. He used his legal and regulatory expertise at NJM in various capacities prior to his elevation to CEO in 2008.
Bernie has served on many nonprofit Boards including Public Media NJ (formerly New Jersey Network Foundation), the Princeton Area Community Foundation, Junior Achievement of NJ, CEO’s Against Cancer (New Jersey Chapter), and Choose New Jersey. He is currently a Trustee of the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Family Foundation and the Greater Trenton economic development organization.
A graduate of Fordham University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (1982) and Rutgers Law School – Camden (1986), Bernie has benefitted from his wife Ann’s partnership in all his professional endeavors. They live in Delran, NJ and have two wonderful children, Jack and Katie.
