Summer at Mercer Street Friends Begins

Mercer Street Friends

Mercer Street Friends is ready for Summer!

We’ll welcome nearly 200 students – Preschool, elementary, and middle school aged – to our Summer Bridge Program. This immersive learning program provides students with reading, writing, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) curriculum, as well as movement and athletic experiences, and we can’t forget the field trips! The Summer Bridge Program, led by Community School Director Bernadette Trapp, and guided by over 60 counselors and educators, will be hosted at Mercer Street Friends Preschool, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, Luis Munoz Rivera Community Elementary School, and Gregory Elementary School, all located in Trenton. We look forward to sharing the students’ stories as they learn, play, and grow!

In our commitment to continue addressing food insecurity, particularly during the summer months when school is closed, the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides free, nutritious meals daily to children in low-income areas. Administered through the Food Bank, Mercer Street Friends is a sponsor organization of five SFSP sites. From June 27th to August 19th, this program helps fill the meal gap with wholesome breakfasts and lunches for over 350 children in Trenton, 5 days a week.

Additionally, Mercer Street Friends Food Bank will continue to respond to the community’s needs by distributing over 5,000 Community Food Bags a month in Trenton and throughout Mercer County. Launched in March 2020, the Community Food Bag program has provided over 1.2 million meals to our neighbors. This summer, we will distribute another 240,000 meals to families experiencing food insecurity.

These programs would not be possible without the generosity of our benefactors and supporters. We are grateful for your continued support and look forward to sharing our summer with you!
